Hello
Everyone,
Just one
more cold month, fellow members,
and then it should start to warm up. I have to say I will be ready to
greet the
arrival of Spring.
February
is our big clean up month. Several
working parties are being organized to bring our fine facility back to
its
normal high standard. Please come down and help out – you may be
surprised by
how enjoyable it can be to work with other Club members. Bill McDaniel
is in
charge of the grounds work party (weekend of the 21st) –
Steve
Shapiro the waterfront (21st) – Mike Hiester sailing (15th)
and Paul Swartz tennis (14th). There will also be a work
party to
bury the power line that is suspended over the pond – date to be
announced.
Our
Sailing Committee has recently acquired
a tender identical to our primary motorboat the “Commodore”. We will be
selling
our 15-foot American Skiff plus the 70 horsepower motor that came with
the new
tender. This acquisition should prove to be very beneficial to our busy
sailing
program.
The Board
of Directors is once again
addressing the unbalanced situation we have with our Life Membership.
This is
the third time in three years the Club leadership has selected this
topic for
revision. I have appointed a committee of three Life Members and three
Regular
Members to review the situation and make recommendations. We currently
have
over 100 Life Members and that number will increase due to the average
age in
the JIYC. In addition to the size of the membership class condition,
there are
fairness issues relating to the 10 year qualification period and the
fact that
the class is not on any dues schedule. A great deal of homework and
debate has
gone into this subject in the last three years. You will be hearing
more on
this very important topic as the year progresses – please take the time
to
discuss the issues as there will most likely be a vote on a By-Laws
change at
some point. Committee Members are: Keith Livermore(L),
Roy
Baker (L), Vernon Scarborough (L), Robert Getsinger (R), Lonny Long
(R), Kenny
Grace (R), Bill McDaniel (R).
What do
you do at the Club on a nasty
February day? Bundle up the kids and bring them down at low tide. Walk
across
the very shallow creek at the boat landing to “Shark Tooth Island” and
hunt for
the small, black sharks teeth that, for some reason, are all over the
beaches
adjoining the club…it’s a lot of fun for young eyes.
