Commodore's Comments

Hello Everyone,

Just one more cold month, fellow members, and then it should start to warm up. I have to say I will be ready to greet the arrival of Spring.

February is our big clean up month. Several working parties are being organized to bring our fine facility back to its normal high standard. Please come down and help out – you may be surprised by how enjoyable it can be to work with other Club members. Bill McDaniel is in charge of the grounds work party (weekend of the 21st) – Steve Shapiro the waterfront (21st) – Mike Hiester sailing (15th) and Paul Swartz tennis (14th). There will also be a work party to bury the power line that is suspended over the pond – date to be announced.

Our Sailing Committee has recently acquired a tender identical to our primary motorboat the “Commodore”. We will be selling our 15-foot American Skiff plus the 70 horsepower motor that came with the new tender. This acquisition should prove to be very beneficial to our busy sailing program.

The Board of Directors is once again addressing the unbalanced situation we have with our Life Membership. This is the third time in three years the Club leadership has selected this topic for revision. I have appointed a committee of three Life Members and three Regular Members to review the situation and make recommendations. We currently have over 100 Life Members and that number will increase due to the average age in the JIYC. In addition to the size of the membership class condition, there are fairness issues relating to the 10 year qualification period and the fact that the class is not on any dues schedule. A great deal of homework and debate has gone into this subject in the last three years. You will be hearing more on this very important topic as the year progresses – please take the time to discuss the issues as there will most likely be a vote on a By-Laws change at some point. Committee Members are: Keith Livermore(L),
Roy Baker (L), Vernon Scarborough (L), Robert Getsinger (R), Lonny Long (R), Kenny Grace (R), Bill McDaniel (R).

What do you do at the Club on a nasty February day? Bundle up the kids and bring them down at low tide. Walk across the very shallow creek at the boat landing to “Shark Tooth Island” and hunt for the small, black sharks teeth that, for some reason, are all over the beaches adjoining the club…it’s a lot of fun for young eyes.

   Ladies Auxiliary Comments:

AWESOME is the word for how the first few months of my year as president has been for me. I have been blessed with talented and fun seeking volunteers and the future appears to be more of the same.  New Year's Eve continues to be applauded by all who were there, and my thanks again to the committee. Chili Cook Off was a great success with Allen Smalls (1st  place), Fran Hanford (2nd place) and Tina Hadden (3rd  place) being the best among 15 pots of chili.
Wine Tasting with Jazz in the Lounge at $5.00 per person on January 28 will provide you with a "Mid-Week" pick me up as Tom and Kathy from The Toddy Shop introduce us to some fine wines. There will also be door prizes.
For February we will feature a "Leather and Lace" night on the 18th so please dress up and come an experience some interesting drinks with the lady bartenders coming back to entertain you. Please try not to park your Harley on the grass. In March dress up in your green and join us for St. Patrick's in the lounge.
On March 27 please join us as we participate in a "Survivor Walk" to benefit Camp Bluebird on Sullivan's Island. Registration Fee is $15.00. If enough sign up we may get a bus to take us and bring us back. For more information please read flyer at club, check the web page or call me. It will be a great way to come together in showing our support for our own friends who are experiencing this dreaded battle for survival.
If you are interested in joining a "Long Range Planning" for the auxiliary please contact either Phyllis or myself. I look forward to seeing you at the club.

We have had a good response from the membership in regard to e-mailing the Cygnet –vs- mailing by the postal system.

We have received almost 400 post cards, and almost 70% of the respondents have accepted the club’s monthly newsletter to be sent to them by use of E-mail notification.  Once the system is “up & running”, this could save the club over $1,000 over a period of a year.

HELP THE CLUB SAVE MONEY!!
When you receive your new purple gate cards, please take special notice of the enclosed pre-stamped postcard.  If you allow the club to inform you about club functions and other club business, we will be able to save money on the postage and printing expenses incurred with the production of the Cygnet.  The following is the information that you will see on the postcard:

 I agree that receiving the Cygnet by e-mail constitutes notification for any assessment, dues changes and other By-law changes that may be presented
 I can cancel this agreement at anytime and receive the Cygnet by regular mail by notifying the Club manager in writing.
 I agree that it is my responsibility to notify the Club Manager in writing or by e-mail should my e-mail address change.
 The JIYC will post the Cygnet to your e-mail address, have copies available at the JIYC and post the Cygnet to the club’s web site (www.jiyc.org).
 The JIYC will keep your e-mail address for club use only.

By agreeing to the above, this will allow the club to save money, plus with your e-mail information, we will be able to inform the membership of special “late-breaking” events that may arise at the club.  If you wish to continue to receive the Cygnet by the traditional US postal system, there is a box to check at the bottom right of your form.

Please Mail Your Postcard Back to the club…ASAP…Thanks
NEW Cards & Form will be mailed by mid-Decemeber.
KEEP YOUR ORANGE CARD UNTIL SWITCH IS MADE!
