Cygnet Sentinal Online

March 2003
Commodore's Comments for March

Well, now that we have reached the halfway point of this fiscal year, it is now time to start getting ready for our busy Summer Season.  All the committee chairmen are actively preparing the club by focusing on the maintenance to our Dock & floating dock system, preparations for our Fishing Tournament, and the “leg work” that is needed to insure that our Regatta runs as smoothly as it has in the past.  If you have the time, please offer your help to any of the club’s committee chairman.
We have many activities planned over the next few months, so please read through this Cygnet, or check the club’s web page for more information.  As many of you have probably already heard, the proposed change to our by-laws regarding Life Membership was not approved by the membership.  Therefore, the board and myself will continue to bring about proposals that will help strengthen our club’s financial future.  I’m sure our finance committee will be busy over the next few months.  Also, it should be know by the membership, that due to raising costs & our current budget situation, the board had to drop the “property” insurance coverage on our dock.  We are still covered for any liability, but our cost analysis showed that keeping the existing policy was not feasible for this fiscal year.
Please remember that if you want to keep your boat parking spot, rental fees must be paid by March 1st.  Soon after that, our manager will be notifying members if any new spots have become open.  If your name is not on the current waiting list, please let Ron know.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Oyster Roast.  We didn’t have as many people as last year, but we still went through 65 bushels of oysters.  Special thanks to the Cooking Committee for the great fish stew.
Please mark your calendar for APRIL 16TH, 23RD, and 30TH.  The club will be sponsoring a POWER SQUADRON COURSE on those evenings.  There will be a minimal charge for the required books and information.  Please check for more information and a Sign Up Sheet in next month’s newsletter, or around the club.

Hope to see you at the Club,     Tom McMillan - Commodore

Ladies Auxiliary

The Annual Oyster Roast was a great success. There was plenty of oysters and beer for all.  The fish stew was delicious as usual.   Mark your calendars for upcoming events.  April 12th the ladies will be holding a health fair at the club.  Ann Livermore is heading up the health fair and she has a variety of health care professionals attending the event.  More information will be forthcoming.  On April 19th the Entertainment Committee will be putting on an Easter Egg Hunt, and Fran promises it will be fun for all who attend. We will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers.  Other dates are August 9th and October 11th any ideas on possible events contact Fran Hanford.

MEETING NOTICE / OYSTER ROAST

Dear IOBG Member & Spouse,

On March 15, 2003 (7pm) the James Island Yacht Club will be having an Oyster Roast  & Business Meeting.  At this meeting, we will discuss the idea of dropping out of District 18.  Currently $38.00 of your $45.00 dues is sent to the district, and many of our members have asked, “what are we getting out of it?”  Therefore, we would like to propose that these funds stay in our own account, which will allow us to manage our funds in a fashion that is more beneficial to our own IOBG and our own Club.  We will have a representative from the District at the meeting.
If you are interested in attending the Oyster Roast and Meeting, please RSVP by March 7th.  Please call the JIYC, and we will “mark you down”. ( 795-6060)

Sincerely,   Billy Hughes – President / JIYC IOBG
