Commodore's Comments for September
I can hardly believe that my year as
Commodore is almost over. I can truly say what a great honor it was
for me to serve as your Commodore. As you can imagine, there are many
that helped make this journey simple and smooth. First of all, I must
commend my Board, whose wisdom and energy was a guiding light. The
next to be thanked is Ron Maguire, who has the knowledge and talent to do
almost any job at the club. To the Ladies Auxiliary, each of my standing
committees, members of those committees and to the countless volunteers who
helped in all kinds of ways, Thank You. Of course, I must thank my
wife Marilynn, who has given support and love during this year. I truly
believe that the James Island Yacht Club is the finest club around and has
some of the greatest members.
Special thanks to Fran, Larry, Bosie, Bill, Steve and all the Ladies
who helped put on the Ladies Luau. It was a great party, and was enjoyed
by all.
At my last general meeting, the proposed by laws change was not ratified,
as it did not receive the necessary 75% to put this changes into effect.
Also, Brian Rawl took his name “out of the hat”, and Evans Jenkins will be
the Vice Commodore for 2003-2004.
Speaking of next year, please purchase your Installation Tickets.
It will be a special event, with your choice of entrée ( food prepared
by Foodeze’s Catering). Don’t miss out on your chance to welcome the
new officers and board members who will be running our great club for the
next fiscal year. Check the lounge or Web page for information on Brave
Heart Night on September 5th !
Last but not least, check inside for details on our JIYC Family Fishing
Tournament.
It was scheduled for October 4TH but we have moved it to the 11th.
As always, you can check for the latest club information on our web page.
Hope to see you at the Club,
Tom McMillan - Commodore

What a luau!! Thanks to Fran Hanford and crew (Barbara Picquet,
Maureen McDaniel, Phyllis Ayling, Lesley Cabell, Melinda Accardo and Judy
Roberts) for a spectacular event. There was plenty of food and the
drinks were flowing. Jack roasted a pig and boy was it delicious.
Bosie came through with the fish, as promised. Thanks to Rocky Accardo,
Bosie Picquet and Bill McDaniel for getting the boat ready for the nights
voyage. If you missed the arrival of the natives ---check out the website.
It’s hard to believe my term is coming to a close. Looking back
over the year, we have had some fantastic events organized by the ladies
and men, like Breakfast with Santa, Lunch with the Easter bunny, Super Bowl
party, the health fair, the fishing tournaments and the Regatta. It
would not have been possible without the support from our members that volunteer
and Ron. The cabinets that Terry Oliver refinished for the lounge look
fabulous. Thanks to Fred Wichmann for donating the wheel table in the
lounge in memory of all the lost sailors. Thanks to all members of
the cooking committee for helping out with some of the ladies events.
It’s been great working with the Ladies board and Tom McMillian, Bruce Stoher
and the men’s board. Wednesday nights have been a blast with the celebrity
bartenders thanks to Steve Ayling. Maureen, Wendy, Phyllis, Melinda
and myself had a great time bartending. Look for the ladies to bartend
again on a Wednesday night. I would encourage you to get involved with
the club if you have not been in the past. We can always use the help.
Maureen, Phyllis and the ladies board will continue working with the men
and ladies groups to make the club enjoyable for all of our club members.
Thanks again for all of the support. It was a great year.
From Maureen and Phyllis some events on the horizon are: October
Breast Cancer Awareness month and a Halloween party for the children.
Check out the web site for more information.
Thanks,
Cathy Estep : President
